History: The Fighting Illini Baseball team of 1959 compiled an overall record of 22 wins vs. 9 losses. Within that victory total came a 16 game winning streak helped along by the best fielding unit in the Big Ten. This was just the 8th season at the helm for Coach Lee Eilbracht who would go on to complete his 27 year career as the winningest coach in school history posting a 518–395 record.

The sleeve patch adorned by many College teams in 1959 commemorates the centennial of the first intercollegiate baseball game in the U.S which featured the Williams Ephs vs. Amherst College in Pittsfield, Mass. Amherst won the game by a score of 73-32.
